A quick thought on board game picks for each player counts

One of the things about a board game day/night is that you can never be certain how it would go. At least for my current group, it’s not always that we have everyone. We play at my place through the weekends, and we are not very strict about time or attendance. So some come every weeks, some once in awhile, and some would randomly pop up. Some would bring friends with them last minute. And they don’t usually show up at the same time.

So every game day/night, we don’t know the exact number who will come, and the number of people throughout the day goes up and down. Which comes to an issue: which games to choose with the varied number of people who turn up.

I mostly play euro and strategic games. Most of the times, 3p up to 5p are my preferred numbers of players. 2p, 3p, and 4p are easy. 5p there are a few good options, or we can split into two groups of 2p and 3p.

But sometimes, the groups do want to play together. The higher the player count, the harder to find a game that would match both our groups’ interests and still offer an entertaining time.

Anyway, I randomly thought about it today, and the below are the first that came across my mind for each player’s count.

  • 1p: Nusfjord, Twilight Inscriptions, Cartographers
  • 2p: Grand Austria Hotel, Yokohama, Ark Nova, Paladins of the West Kingdom
  • 3p: Res Arcana, Little Town, Azul, Clash of Cultures
  • 4p: Gaia Project, Brass: Birmingham, Dune: Imperium
  • 5p: Concordia, Terra Mystica, Hansa Teutonica, Villagers
  • 6p: Dominant Species, Architects of the West Kingdom, Tiny Town, Finishing Time, Power Grid
  • 7p: It’s a wonderful world, Citadels, Space Base, Saboteur

Note that these are just the first ones popped up in my head. I think I should dive deeper on the reasons behind these picks one day. Maybe I would even realize that these picks were not right. But not today. Time for a quick Twilight Inscription game before bed and starting a new week at work tomorrow.
